Jan 31, 2020 - Grade 2 (Sunday PM)

Hari Om Families!
Hope you are well.

We have been delving into Section 2 of the curriculum in the past few classes. The students received a wonderful introduction to the Hanuman Calisa and explored who wrote the prayer. Various words such as calisa, caupais, and doha were reiterated and students are more than comfortable using them! Your wonderful children have taken on the challenge of reciting as much as they can in front of the class, and so far they are doing a wonderful job. Regardless of how much they are able to say, it shows immense dedication and the ability to absorb what they hear. We started dissecting the first doha and spoke about the term, "guru". Students spoke about who their teachers were apart from the ones they have at school. We then studied the second doha and spoke about how we can serve and do our duties just like Hanumanji. Your children do an impressive job in fostering comparisons between their home life and our curriculum, and that in itself implicates a solid understanding of the content. Caupai 1 introduced the children to how Hanumanji got his name, and they heard the story. They are always very attentive when hearing stories, and they are able to discuss with their peers and eventually come to an agreement of the moral.

A few classes ago we learned about Hanumanji's job as a messenger to Lord Rama through Caupai 2. We spoke about the qualities of a good messenger and played the Telephone game to test whether we would be an efficient messenger. This simple game taught the children that in order to be a good messenger, one must be a good listener, deliver the message to the right person, and deliver the correct message. In telephone, one child is supposed to create a phrase and whisper it in the ear of the person next to them. Then, every child does the same action with the person sitting next to them until it reaches the last person, who then says what they heard aloud. It was very funny; it was nothing like the original phrase! But it did teach them the importance of being a good messenger and how incredibly difficult Hanumanji's job was at times but how he remained resilient.

In the last two classes, the children worked on making Japa malas. They enjoyed this activity very much and are able to use it to chant Sri Rama Jaya Rama. We also spoke about Kumati and Sumati and the students heard two stories distinguishing the two.

The children have began to get used to chanting the Hanuman Calisa and Bhagavad Gita. I hope you are planning on enrolling your child in the Bhagavad Gita competition. It is a wonderful experience and challenging yet fulfilling. Please be sure to chant both of these things with your child regularly.

Dec 8, 2019 - Grade 2 (Sunday PM)

Hari Om Families,
Hope you are well and are enjoying your holiday!

This wonderful 2nd grade class has come a long way since the start of Balavihar. In the last class, we finished the first section of the curriculum, which was all about the Dhyana Sloka. The students learned the entire sloka, most by hearting it, and were able to quickly name each attribute in English matched to the sloka. We spoke about Balam (Strength), Yasas (Fame), Dhairyam (Courage), Nirbhayatvam (Fearlessness), Arogata (Free From Disease), Ajadyam (Alertness), and Vakpatutvam (Eloquence). The children were asked to recall many past life experiences to further understand these attributes. They all had very creative ideas and were able to connect a lot of things they experience on the daily with what we were teaching. One interesting activity we did was on the day we were teaching the students about Alertness or Ajadyam. We split the class into boys and girls and had each group go to the main hall separately. The children were asked to observe what was around them, remember the objects, and come back and name as many as they could. The students really enjoyed this activity and exposed them to the idea of being alert and aware of their surroundings. Activities like these were practiced in every class to convey the attributes to the children, and they came across very well.

In the last class, we did a backbone arts and crafts activity. The children cut out the names of each attribute, both in Sanskrit and English, and created Hanuman's Backbone. It was made to convey to students all the attributes Hanuman has that make up his backbone and give him strength. Students loved the activity and we will display them in our classroom. Tomorrow we will be starting Section 2 of the curriculum, which is all about the Hanuman Chalisa.

The children have also been chanting Hanuman Chalisa in every class. They are moving at a great pace and with practice at home, they will be great! Please make sure to practice both Hanuman Chalisa and the Bhagavad Gita with your children. They will benefit from this a lot.

Oct 20, 2019 - Grade 2 (Sunday PM)

Hari Om Families,

Hope you are well and ready for Diwali! I will be sending emails every other week in order to avoid redundancy.

In the last two classes we spent time honing in on the Dhyana Shloka and its attributes. We started with the Empty Pot story and discussed its meaning. The children were able to take away righteous values regarding truthfulness. We moved on to Buddhih and told the story of Akbara and Birbala. The children practiced using their Buddhih in a game of Pooja Didi Says! In our short class on October 20th, we went over Balam and Yasas (Strength & Fame). We spoke about what it means to be mentally strong along with fame and what it takes to receive it. The children have been chanting Dhyana Shloka every class and are become very well versed with it!

We also began Hanuman Chalisa in the last class and worked on the first few stanzas. We will be working on a little bit at a time every week, and will be relaying the meaning as well. The children participated very well in the House games too!
