Mahabharat - Dice game

After Indraprasta incident, Duryodhana was very upset and wanted to take revenge against Pandavas. Shakuni makes a plot to invite Pandavas to invite Pandavas to Hastinapur and defeat them in Dice Game and take away their kingdom (get their wealth, their kingdom, everything out of them).
Duryodhana suddenly livened up – he showered, changed his clothes, ate, and full of vigor, went to his father and said, "Father, we must invite the Pandavas for a game of dice." The moment Bhishma heard this, he stepped in and said, "No way." For the first time, Duryodhana revolted openly against Bhishma and said, "You are an old man. You do not understand the politics of the day. Leave it to me." Until then, no one had ever spoken deprecatingly to Bhishma. But now he got pushed aside by this young man. Everyone present was aghast, but no one had the courage to say anything.
Dhritarashtra said he did not like the idea, but he actually liked it. They sent the invitation to the Pandavas. Yudhishthira was such a good man that he said, "Our cousins have invited us. They just came to us as our guests. Now it is our dharma to go to them and be their guests." Bhima said, "We would be utterly stupid to go back to that place and play a game of dice with them. They got something up their sleeves. They will once again try to eliminate us in some way." Yudhishthira said, "No, it is our dharma. When they call me for a game of dice, as a king, I cannot say 'No.'" And he liked to play, even though he did not know how to play.

The Game Begins

In full regal glory, the five brothers, their queen, and their whole entourage were set to journey back to Hastinapur. Duryodhana wanted to build an assembly hall for the game of dice that was equally good as the one the Pandavas had. He hired a local architect, and, in an effort to impress, made the hall horribly garish. Even his own brothers, who otherwise had no taste either, did not like the hall. And the Pandavas made the mistake of not informing Krishna, who had gone back to Dwaraka. They went there by themselves, thinking that, after all, they were just visiting their cousins.
The Pandavas arrived at the hall. The full assembly of the court was present to watch the game of dice. Yudhishthira sat down, ready to play. Then Duryodhana came, but he sat down away from the dice board. People looked a little surprised, and Duryodhana announced, "Shakuni, my uncle, will play for me." A murmur went through the assembly. Everyone knew Shakuni was an uncanny dicer. Playing dice was all he was doing, all the time. And everyone knew these dice he had were occult-charged. People whispered, "This is not fair. Yudhishthira will lose."
Yudhishthira said to Duryodhana, "I thought I was playing with you." Duryodhana replied, "Brother, why are you afraid? My uncle is playing for me. What is the problem? We are of the same blood. Have you lost your courage?" Yudhishthira said, "No, it is okay. We will play." They asked him, "What is your wager?" Yudhishthira bet his elephants, his horses – all kinds of things. Every time Shakuni rolled the dice, he got what he wanted and Yudhishthira lost.

From Kings to Slaves

Dhritarashtra, the blind king, had his assistant Sanjaya by his side to provide him commentary of the game. Every time Dhritarashtra heard the dice roll, he eagerly asked, "Who won? Who won?" Every time, Shakuni won. Yudhishthira lost the whole treasury. He lost his army. He lost his personal jewels. Then his brothers had to give the ornaments they were wearing, and he lost them. These ornaments had not only monetary value, but were objects of prestige. Losing them was almost like losing their status.
Then Yudhishthira put the kingdom at stake and lost it. People were looking on in dismay. Bhishma stood up and said, "Stop the game." Duryodhana shouted him down, "It is not for you to stop the game. We are playing this game as per the dharma of the Kshatriyas. If Yudhishthira is afraid of playing the game, he may leave. No one else can stop the game." Yudhishthira was not afraid of anything. He knew how to walk into any trap in the world. He lost the kingdom. Then Shakuni taunted, "I will give you one more chance. If you wager your brother Bhima, you can win back your kingdom and everything else."
First he put Nakula at stake, and lost him. Then he lost Sahadeva. Then he lost Arjuna. Finally, he lost Bhima too. Then Shakuni said, "This is your chance now, Yudhishthira. Put yourself at stake, and you can win back everything." Yudhishthira rolled the dice and lost himself. The Kauravas roared with joy. "The Pandavas are our slaves now! They have to take instructions from us. Take off your upper garments!" This was a symbolism of slavery – a slave was not allowed to wear an upper garment. The Pandava brothers took off their upper garments and stood in shame. Just fifteen minutes ago, they had been kings. Now they stood there partially disrobed, as slaves, not knowing what to do next.

The Humiliation of Draupadi

Then Karna suggested, "You can wager your wife, your queen." Draupadi was not present in the court. It was her time of the month, so she was in the private quarters. They tempted Yudhishthira. "This is your chance. You can win back your brothers, your kingdom, and everything. Your queen versus all that – if you win, you take everything. You will win, of course. This is your lucky time." Yudhishthira wagered his wife, and lost her. Immediately, Duryodhana roared in delight. He said, "Draupadi is our slave. Bring her here." They sent a messenger. A male messenger was generally not allowed into the queen's chambers, particularly at this time of the month. When the messenger was turned back, Duryodhana told his brother Dushasana, "Who is she to say whether she can come or not? Go get her."
Dushasana went, broke open the doors, entered the chambers, and said, "Come!" When Draupadi replied, "How dare you walk into my chambers!" he took her by the hair and dragged her away. Her clothes were stained with blood. She said, "I am in a single garment and I am in this condition. How can you touch me and drag me like this?" He said, "It does not matter. You are our slave," and he just pulled her by the hair through the corridors of the palace and brought her into the court. A few people stood up and said, "This is not dharma. Never before in the court of a king has a woman been treated like this." But Duryodhana said, "This is the law. She is a slave. I can treat her whichever way I want."
Enraged, Draupadi sat up and pleaded with Bhishma to interfere, but he put his head down. Then she asked, "Did Yudhishthira wager me first or himself first?" They said, "Yudhishthira wagered himself first." Then she said, "If he had already lost himself and he was already a slave, he had no right to put me at stake." People asked Bhishma, the ultimate judge about questions of dharma, "Since Yudhishthira had already lost himself, could he jeopardize his wife?" The expert in law that he was, Bhishma gravely said, "According to the dharma, even a slave has the right over his wife. So even as a slave, he had the right to wager her."
The law that was meant to be for the wellbeing of human beings became technical to a point where in establishing legality, humanity was lost. What happened there was the cruelest scene. And as if that was not enough, they started taunting Draupadi. According to ancient law, if a king or a Kshatriya had no children, with his permission, his wife could bear children from up to three other men. But if she went to a fifth man, she was considered a whore. Karna tried to shame Draupadi by saying, "She is living with five men. She is not a wife – she is a whore. We can do whatever we want with her." And he told Draupadi, "Why only five – now you have a hundred!"

December 8th, 2019 - Grade 5 (Sunday PM)

Following is summary of Balavihar session on December 8th 2019

Hidimbi, now married to Bheema, takes the Pandavas and their mother to Lake Salivahana. A year later, she gives birth to Ghatotkacha. Soon, the Pandavas leave for Ekachakra. Baka, an asura had been terrorizing Ekachakra, finds his next victim in the Brahmin, whose home shelters the Pandavas. Bheema offers to go in his place and defeats the cannibalistic asura, much to the joy of the citizens of Ekachakra.
In the midst of all this rejoicing, a world traveller visits the Brahmin's home in Ekachakra and reveals stories of Drupada's hatred for Drona, Drupada's Putrakameśti yagna (to have a son who would kill Drona and a daughter to give in marriage to the brave Arjuna), and the resulting births of Dhrishtadhyumna and Draupadi, the unfortunate deaths of the Pandavas in the burning of the lac palace, the suspicions on Dhritarashtra, Duryodhana and Śakuni, and so on. He also mentions that Drupada doesn't believe that the righteous and mighty Pandavas could be dead, which is why he organizes a swayamvara for his daughter, Draupadi. Hearing this, Kunti decides to go to Kampilya in the kingdom of Panchala.

The Pandavas and their mother Kunti head out of Ekachakra and set their path towards Kampilya, in anticipation of the grand swayamvara. On their way, they decide to take a short break by the banks of the river Ganga, where they meet Angāraparna or  Chithraratha, an arrogant Gandharva who claims the river cannot be used by the Pandavas. He then shoots arrows at Arjuna who shoots the agneya astra and burns his chariot. With the loss of his pride and his beautiful chariot, he renames himself Dagdharatha (burned chariot) and with great humility gives Arjuna the power to see happenings in all 3 worlds. He also suggests they get a kulaguru to guide them in their every endeavor and even suggests Dhaumya, who, when approached, accepts the role readily.
Soon, the Pandavas arrived in Kampilya, where they stayed with a Potter. The day of the swayamvara dawns and the Pandavas(dressed as Brahmins), Kauravas with Radheya, Balarama and Krishna and many other prominent kings were present at the hall. Draupadi was brought and the competition started. Many could not even string the kindhura bow, while greats like Radheya missed the target by the breadth of a hair. Arjuna leaped out of his seat, grabbed the bow and shot the arrow in the exact mark, hitting the matsya. Draupadi then places the garland around him. Meanwhile Krishna recognizes Arjuna's talent and realizes that the 5 Brahmins were actually the Pandavas in disguise. On arrival at their cottage in Kampilya, the Pandavas announce the arrival of Bhiksha, and Kunti asks them to share it among themselves, little knowing that she has now asked her sons to share Draupadi.

After the Pandavas return, Krishna and Balarama come to meet them at their little cottage And rejoice in the company of their cousins and aunt.
Meanwhile, Drupada is worried about his daughter's suitor and the fact that he is not aware of his past or present. He also worries that the future may not be a comfortable one. He voices his concerns to Dhrishtadhyumna, who appeases him by following the Pandavas back to their home. He overhears their conversations, sees their respect for the mother and their general disposition towards people and comes to the conclusion that they are of noble descent and most definitely Kshatriyas. He conveys the message to his father, who then starts preparing for the marriage of Draupadi.
On the day of the wedding, the Pandavas with their mother arrive at the Palace and are treated to the rituals of the marriage. Drupada, to quell his doubts, then asks them for their identities. Yudhisthira rises and reveals their true identities as the Pandavas and also the reason behind their disguise. Drupada is overjoyed and promises them the loyalty of his subjects and his army.
Drupada's happiness, however, is shortlived when Yudhisthira tells Drupada that the marriage will be between Draupadi and all 5 brothers. While pondering over the dilemma, Sage Vyaasa enters the palace and consoles Drupada that the marriage should happen as stated by Yudhishthira because of a boon (from Lord Shiva) received by Draupadi in a previous birth.

In Hastinapur, there is anger and disappointment. The Pandavas were alive and well to not just survive the fire but also win the hand of the beautiful Draupadi. Listening to Radheya, Duryodhana decides you wage war against the Pandavas. They are routed by the Pandavas and Drupada's mighty army. The turn of events upset Vidura who talks to Dhritarashtra on keeping a tight rein on his sons and also reveals the good fortune of the Pandavas.
Meanwhile Duryodhana overhears the conversation and gets upset, but Dhritarashtra speaks of his unhappiness and tells Duryodhana that he cannot reveal his true feelings in front of Vidura.
A meeting of the elders and the king is arranged at the assembly hall, where Bhishma tells Duryodhana to share the kingdom with the Pandavas. Everybody agrees, and Dhritarashtra is forced to evenly split the kingdom.
Vidura is sent to bring the Pandavas from Kampilya. They are given one half of the Kingdom - Khandavaprastha. A former capital that now lay in ruins as a barren wasteland. Yudhisthira is quickly coronated the king of Khandavaprastha, and the Pandavas along with their mother and wife move to their new Kingdom.
Vishwakarma, the divine architect, is asked to transform Khandavaprastha, at the behest of Lord Indra. The new and beautiful kingdom is then renamed Indraprastha.

The Pandavas come out with an agreement to share Draupadi equally. While Draupadi was in the apartments of one brother, the other brothers were not allowed to disturb. Unfortunately, an unforeseen incident causes Arjuna to visit Yudhisthira while Draupadi is present. Arjuna self imposes a 12 year exile on himself, much upsetting his family. His teerthayatra takes him to many kingdoms, where he befriends the kings and gathers allies. On one of his visits, he marries a princess Ulupi and has a son Iravan. At another kingdom, he marries Princess Chitrangada and begets a son named Babruvahana. On his way back to Hastinapur, he decides to stop at Dwaraka in the pretext of visiting Krishna. His true reason for the visit was to see his love, Subhadra(Krishna's sister) and convince her to marry him. He dons the disguise of an ascetic and lives in the gardens by Subhadra's living quarters, with help from Krishna. She tends to him every day and speaks of her love for Arjuna. He reveals his true self and they decide to elope. Balarama wants his sister to marry Duryodhana, his favorite student. But Krishna convinces him to change his mind. And Arjuna marries Subhadra.

Following is summary of Balavihar session on Sep 22, 2019

  • Started the class with Meditation (2 mins), Guru Stotram
  • Continue to learn – Ajam Nirvikalpam
  • We learnt the story of Shantanu & Ganga and Birth of Devavrath as well  Kuru Dynasty (family tree). Following is brief
    • Shantanu was King of Hastinapuur. He was Wise, Caing and Justice loving.
    • One day, Shantanu saw a beautiful woman on the banks of the river Ganges (Ganga) and asked her to marry him. She agreed but with one condition: that Shantanu would not ask any questions about her actions.
    • They married and she later gave birth to a son. But she drowned the child. Shantanu could not ask her the reason, because of his promise, lest she would leave him. One by one, seven sons were born to them and were drowned by Ganga. W
    • When Ganga was about to drown the eighth son, Shantanu, devastated, could not restrain himself and confronted her.
    • Then she told him that their eight children were Eight Vasus who were cursed by Vasishtha to be born on earth as mortal humans however when they pacified him, he limited his curse and told them that they would be freed from this curse within a year of their birth as humans. So she released the seven of them from this life by drowning them all. However the Vasu Dyaus was cursed to live a long life and to never have a wife or have children. But the sage also gave a boon to him that he would be virtuous, conversant with all the holy scriptures and will be an obedient son to his father.
    • Gangai mentioned to Shantanu that, she will take him to the heavens to train him properly for the King's throne and status. With these words she disappeared along with the child while Shantanu was struck with grief thinking about spending the rest of his life without her.
  • We started to learn rich Indian philosophy, intellectual treasury and Saints. We narrated the story of Alexander, who wanted to take Saints from India after the War.
    • When Alexander, the great came to India, he found the Indians to be brave and fearless. When he was ready to return to his country, he remembered that his people had asked him to bring a yogi, a saint from India. So, he went to forest to look for a yogi and he found one yogi sitting under a tree in a meditation (eyes closed)
    • Alexander waited patiently until yogi came out of meditation. He requested yogi to come with him to Greece & he will give everything that yogi requests / needs. Yogi replied I need nothing, I have everything I need, I am very Happy.
    • Alexander was not used to anyone saying no to him. He got upset and asked "Do you know who am I and whom are you talking to".
    • The yogi replied "Sir, I know, whom I am talking to, I am taling to the slave of my slave. Besides you cannot kill me! You can kill my body"
    • Alexander was shocked, he asked "How am I slave of your slave?" The yogi replied "I mastered the anger, Anger is my slave and see how easily you got anger!"
    • Through this incident, Alexander realized that, the saints are backbond of India's strength.
