Feb 9, 2019 - Grade 4 (Sunday PM)

Hari Om Parents,

We started our class today with the chanting of Govinda Damodara Stotram.

The topic of the day from Krishna's story was a tale of The Salvation of Sudarsana and the story of Samkhachuda. We had a couple of kids read these stories to the entire class and the kids listened to them with rapt attention. When Krishna was twelve years old, his father Nanda took a vow to offer special prayers to the family goddess Ambika. After all the rituals were performed everyone decided to spend the night in the temple and after they lay down to rest, they were awoken by the loud screams of Nanda to see that his foot was in the mouth of a big Python and when Krishna came and touched its back with his leg, the huge Python turned into handsome person, who went by the name Sudarsana in his previous life. He was cursed by a rishi for his pride of good looks and his arrogant behavior of making fun of others.
The moral that this story teaches is not be proud or arrogant of one's talents, skills or looks.

The story of Samkhachuda is about how the Gopis were seized by an Yaksha and were eventually rescued by Krishna and Balarama.
We also talked about control of the senses and how to use them wisely, like for example, though the tongue wants to gossip, we will not do that as its not good to bad mouth others and though it feels like eating a whole box of candies we should not as its not good for health.

The topic of My 24 teachers is about an Osprey bird. It teaches us that the source of misery is indeed the acquisition of whatever we love the most. Once an Osprey was carrying a big fish in its beak. It was then attacked by a few stronger birds and they all were troubling the Osprey until it let the fish go. Similarly, man becomes fond of some objects in his possession, and that very object causes him unhappiness. Kids read a couple of stories that emphasized the same concept.
The moral taught is, Let go and be happy, instead of, Hold on and be unhappy.

We chanted Bhagavad Gita slokas 1 through 12 in the class. We will be recording 5-10 in our next class. Please have the kids practice them at home.

Jan 26, 2019 - Grade 4 (Sunday PM)

Hari Om Parents,

The following are the synopsis of today's class.
We commenced our class with Om chanting and opening prayer of Sahanavavtu, and then recited Govinda Damodara Stotram a couple of times.

The topic from My 24teachers today was about the honey gatherer. What we learn from him is that when we collect too much of anything, more than our needs, then our fate is similar to that of honey bees, whose honey is taken by the honey gatherer. Use what you have and do not hoard.
We narrated the story of a Greedy Barber. There was once a barber who was employed by a king. He was a nice person whom the king was fond of and worked for him for a long time. One day while the barber was going back home after his job, he heard a constant voice that kept asking him if he wanted more wealth, gold and diamonds. Though he initially was scared of the voice, he eventually felt tempted and says Yes to the offering. As soon as he reaches home he finds seven pots of gold and diamonds of which the seventh one is only half filled. He and his wife were very surprised to see the immense wealth and instead of being happy they start grieving as the seventh pot is only half filled. Most of the kids very smart enough to point out why they weren't happy with the six pots full of gold. This is where Greed comes into picture. Both the barber and his wife start working harder, loosing their sleep and appetite in order to fill the seventh jar but all the their efforts are in vain. The jar never get filled. This was actually a test by the god to see if they were content with what they had. The greed of wanting more makes their life full of misery and their worries vanish only when the greed disappears from their hearts.
Be content with what you have is the moral.

We covered the lifting of the Govardhana giri story from Krishna's book.
Preparations were underway for the grand celebrations of Yagna to Lord Indra. Lord Krishna tells his father that it would make more sense to worship the cows which are the means of their livelihood, which provide them with milk and also worship mount Govardhana for giving green grass and rich pastures. Once everyone unanimously decides on worshipping the cows, brahmins and mount Govardhana and not Indra, it makes him terribly jealous and angry.
Lord Indra out of arrogance creates havoc in Vrindavana by unleashing torrential rains, hail, thunder, storms and flooding upon the helpless people. The whole village goes to Lord Krishna asking him to save them from Indra's fury. The lord was moved at their plight and lifts the Govardhana with one hand and places it on his pinky, providing protection to all not just for a day or two but for seven days and nights. Indra gets puzzled at this and realizes his mistake of being arrogant and feels sorry.
Arrogance never does good to anyone is the moral.

We also had a small discussion of what Karma (action) and Karma phala (result) mean.
A person who is hungry must perform the Karma of eating to get the Result of fullness.
If one sows Lemon seeds, it would be impossible and unnatural to yield Oranges. As you sow , so shall you reap! We also talked about selfless acts, of which Mother Teresa was a perfect role model, who most of the kids were familiar with.

We concluded our class by chanting the 22nd, 23rd verses from Bhagavad Gita following Swami Ji's video.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me or Roopa at roopab77@yahoo.com.

Thank you,
Purna and Roopa.

Jan 12, 2020 - Grade 4 (Sunday PM)

Hari Om Parents,

Here are the synopsis of yesterday's class.
We commenced our class with Om chanting and opening prayer of Sahanavavtu, after which we recited Govinda Damodara Stotram.

We started the story time by asking the kids how trees are useful to mankind. All the kids answered by taking turns about everything they provide us with like flowers, leaves, fruits, roots, bark with which furniture and violins are made, shade from hot scorching sun and from rain etc., Trees provide service to us although they themselves suffer from heat, rain, wind and frost.
We next talked about another story from Krishna's book. It was about the intense devotion of women who served the Lord and the gopas with food that had been cooked for the sacred yagna as prasad, against the wishes of their husbands. Serving people in need is nothing less than serving the Lord himself is the moral of the story.
One of the kids read the story of King Sibi who was known for his kindness and service. His generosity knew no bounds, and once offered himself to an eagle to save the life of an innocent pigeon who was being chased by it for its meal.
We emphasized the importance of volunteering and being of service to others in whatever little way one can.

Next we covered 5 teachers, the Moth, Bee, Elephant, Fish and Deer from my 24 teachers book where each of them teach us a moral.
A Moth gets attracted to flames, doesn't care of the imminent danger and gets burned. Similarly a person who does not have self control gets attracted to things that might destroy him.
Like the Bees that collect honey from different flowers and sizes, a man also should learn from all regardless of how big or small.
A Fish has no control over its sense of taste, it gets attracted to the bait of the hook and dies.
In the same manner if a person does not have control on what he eats then his body wouldn't function properly.
A Deer is attracted to sweet music and hunters take advantage of that and catch them by playing melodious songs. In the same manner, a man should not be drawn to the sweet words of false praise.
Elephants always travel in herds and are very attached to their families. Hunters make use of this, and place dummy elephants to lure them, and the elephants foolishly fall in the traps. Too much attachment to worldly object sometimes clouds a man's sense of intelligence.

We concluded our class by chanting the 19th, 20th and 21st verses from Bhagavad Gita following Swami Ji's video.
We also recorded kids chanting the first five slokas. Most of them did it from memory. This will earn points for their Krishna's Cowboys team. Will share the video on our WhatsApp group. We would appreciate if they can practice the next five slokas, 5-10, which we will record in our upcoming class.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me or Roopa at roopab77@yahoo.com.
Balavihar is not in session on January 19th on account of MLK long weekend. Will see the kids on January 26th.

Thank you,
Purna and Roopa.

Dec 15, 2019 - Grade 4 (Sunday PM)

Hari Om Parents,

Heres' the summary of our last Sunday's class.
We commenced our class with Om chanting and opening prayer of Sahanavavtu as always, after which we recited Govinda Damodara Stotram. We started Krishna Ashtakam and covered the first 2 slokas.

We covered 2 Krishna's stories. The first one was about the death of demon Aghasura who was the younger brother of Putana and Bakasura and was waiting to avenge their deaths.
He disguised himself as a huge, long Python and waited in the forest with his mouth wide open to devour Krishna and his friends, the Gopas. Though the Gopas were unsure of the threat lying ahead of them, they were more than confident that their dear friend, Krishna would save them from any kind of danger lurking around and walked right into the open mouth of the monstrous snake. Bhagawan knows that the Python was indeed a demon and kills it by choking from inside his throat before the Gopas were consumed by it and saves them.
The second story is about Lord Brahma who with arrogance tries to test the divinity of Lord Krishna. Once when Krishna and all the Gopas go to the banks of river Yamuna with their cattle, the claves get strayed away. Lord Brahma with mischief hides all the calves in mountain cave. Bhagawan looks high and low in the forest to trace them but to no avail. He returns to tell the same to the Gopas, and to his astonishment they go missing too. It doesn't take long for the lord of the universe to realize that Brahma ji is playing a trick on him and decides to teach him a lesson. He multiplies himself and assumes the exact forms of the Gopas and the Claves and they all return to their homes. No one suspects a thing and and the days pass for almost an year. Brahma ji after seeing the power of Lord Krishna who manifested himself in all those forms realizes the lord's greatness and bows down to him.
We had one of the kids read another story of a turtle and 2 cranes which teaches us the moral of not to Show Off with arrogance.

The eighth teacher from My 24 teachers book this week was the Pigeon. We talked about a story of family of Pigeons who were living happily on a tree. One fine day a hunter comes and traps the baby pigeons while the parents go out for food. Once they return they could not bear the sight of their babies being trapped and they too fall into it and the whole family gets killed. What you learn from this is, troubles do come in life, but face them with courage and try to find a proper solution, instead, if you are too attached to things you will not make the right judgement.
The kids had fun doing an activity of word hunt. They solved a puzzle and discovered the secret message. The handout is with them if you wish to see.

We concluded our class by chanting the 11th, 12th and 13th verses from Bhagavad Gita following Swami Ji's video.

A small request to please have your kids come on time,12:45. It kind of disrupts the class when they walk in late.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me or Roopa at roopab77@yahoo.com.
We will see the kids next Sunday, Dec 22nd.

Thank you,
Purna and Roopa.

Dec 8, 2019 - Grade 4 (Sunday PM)

Hari Om Parents,

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanks giving break.
Our class started with the Om chanting and opening prayer of Sahanavavtu as always.
We recited Govinda Damodara Stotram. It would be nice if the kids practiced the same at home. We will start Krishna Ashtakam next week.

We covered the story of the fruit seller from Krishna Krishna everywhere book. It is about a lady who comes to Bhagawan's house with a basket full fo fruits and little Krishna asks her to give her some. The fruit seller likes the little boy with his bewitching eyes and cute smile and lets him have whatever he asked for from her basket. She sees Krishna's baby face light up with delight as he starts to sink in his teeth into the fruit after which she leaves for her home. On the way she suddenly feels her basket getting heavier with each step. Once she reaches home and puts her basket down, she gets a surprise of her life. All the fruits in the basket have been replaced by diamonds and precious gems. The lord did this so He could bless His devotee for her simple love and generosity. Through this story the kids learnt the importance of being Generous and have a Giving attitude.
We also talked about how the elders from the Gokula village decide to move to a place called Vrindavana as they feel that a lot of calamities have befallen their village.
Next, we made a couple of kids read stories of Vatsasura and Bakasura, 2 demons disguised as Calf and Crane respectively.

Our 7th teacher from My 24 teachers book was the SUN. The Sun teaches us to work our full capacity, earn reward and save it; and at the right time give it back to the society, just like the sun's rays evaporate water from the earth; collects water and stores in form of clouds, and at the right time gives it back to the earth in the form of rain.
We engaged the kids with a small activity based on the concept that though Sun is reflected in different pools of water as many and varied, but in reality it is only one. We had each kid try on different hats, like a basket ball cap, a graduation hat, Santa hat and bike helmet. By simply changing hats they temporarily became the respective characters and assumed that role, but in reality they were still themselves.

Towards the end of the class we chanted verses 9 and 10 from Bhagavad Gita following Swamiji's video and also practiced chanting verses 1 through 10 a couple of times.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me or Roopa at roopab77@yahoo.com

We will see the kids next Sunday. Have a great week ahead.

Thank you,
Purna and Roopa.

Nov 24, 2019 - Grade 4 (Sunday PM)

Hari Om Parents,

Our class started with the Om chanting and opening prayer of Sahanavavtu as always.
We have finished learning Govinda Damodara Stotram and so recited it a couple of times. It would be nice if they could practice at home. We will soon be starting Krishna Ashtakam.

My 24 teachers topic today was Moon. Every chapter in this book begins with a riddle as a way of introducing a teacher and kids are quite curious and excited about it. The moon appears to be changing with time. The cycle goes on starting from full moon to new moon. Though the moon appears to be constantly changing, in reality it doesn't. This teaches us that though the human body and everything around it is subject to change with age, the indweller, Bhagawan, stays the same. We talked about how the ups and downs in life should not make one elated or depressed instead be balanced thinking that, "This too shall pass". We made the kids read a story about the same. We told them about the importance of being thankful to the lord as well as people around them for whatever they have.

Our next story was about the mischievous baby Krishna. We told them the story of how Balarama complains to Yashoda that Krishna eats mud and when asked he denies it.
Mother Yashoda asks Krishna to open his mouth wide as she feels that he is lying and will be aghast once she sees the entire universe in his mouth. She realizes that baby Krishna is none other than Lord Vishnu but the lord makes her forget everything she has seen so that she can enjoy all the aspects of a true mother and would treat him as her son with love, hugs, scolding and much more.
We also covered another story of Krishna where his constant naughtiness makes Mother Yashoda get angry and she ties him to a huge Mortar with a rope. but the lord being his mischievous self couldn't stay put and drags the enormous stone between 2 huge trees uprooting them. In a way Bhagawan does this to liberate two celestial beings from their curse.
Whenever Krishna takes butter or curd from his house he wouldn't eat it alone but shares them with everyone around him. Through this the kids learnt the virtue of Sharing.

The kids did Likhita japa for sometime after which we all chanted slokas 7 & 8 from Bhagavad Gita along with Swami ji. We also recited 1 thru 8. We will be recording slokas 1-4 in our next class to earn our house points.

Balavihar is not in session next Sunday, Dec 1 on account of Thanks giving.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me or Roopa at roopab77@yahoo.com

Enjoy your Thanks Giving break!

Thank you,
Hari Om,
Purna & Roopa.

Nov 3, 2019 - Grade 4 (Sunday PM)

Hari Om Parents,

Update on our Sunday's class.

Our class started with Om Chanting and opening prayer of Sahanavavatu. The kids learnt 9th and 10th slokas of Govinda Damodara stotram and we finished it. Please have them practice at home.

Our topic from My 24 teachers book this week was Water.
Water is sweet and purifies whatever it comes in contact with.Water by nature is very pure, cool and refreshing. Good people are like water which cleanse. They revive others by their good deeds, thoughts and words. We told children about the importance of speech, which is a gift from god and must utilize it to the best by speaking sweet and kind words. We made the kids read a couple of stories in class that emphasized the same.

We also had a small group activity which reiterated the same, Speech is a gift.
We passed out handouts and kids had to answer a few questions which they will share with you soon.

Coming to our next book, Krishna Krishna everywhere, We talked about the celebrations in Gokula after hearing the news of Bhagawan's birth, the killing of Demoness Putana and Demon Trinavrata, whom Kamsa had sent to slain baby Krishna. Both the Rakshasa's disguised themselves, one as a beautiful lady and other as a powerful tornado to kill the lord but got slained themselves in his hands. Bhagawan forgave them by giving liberation.
Through these stories the kids learnt the moral of forgiveness and its importance.

We had our class pictures taken. The children all looked very good dressed in their best Indian attire. Thanks to all the parents.

Towards the end we recited the 3rd and 4th slokas of Chapter 1 from Bhagavad Gita along with Swamiji's video. We also practiced the first two. Handful of kids have already memorized them.
It would be nice if they could find some time to practice these at home. We will be recording them in class which will earn house points for their team.

ANNOUNCEMENT
Balavihar is not in session coming Sunday, Nov 10th.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me or Roopa at roopab77@yahoo.com

Oct 27, 2019 - Grade 4 (Sunday PM)

Hari Om Parents,

Our class started with Om Chanting and opening prayer of Sahanavavatu. The kids learnt 7th and 8th slokas of Govinda Damodara stotram. Please have them practice at home.
We also chanted Karaagre vasate and Deepa jyoti slokas from My prayers book.

Our Topic from My 24 teachers was Space. We talked about the all pervading space which is in and through everything. Similarly, Bhagawan is also everywhere, Omnipresent. There is no place where he is NOT. Just as the flames of fire, thunderstorms, or rain does not affect space in any way, all different names and forms, objects and beings that are in the world affect the lord. In a garland, a thread supports all the flowers, so also Bhagwan supports all the beings.

We continued our story of Lord Krishna. We talked about how Vasudeva stepped out of the jail with the baby in his basket and walked through the thunderstorms during the dark night. He went to the bank of Yamuna river who paved way for him to walk and the thousand hooded serpant guarded the lord as an umbrella.
Vasudeva arrived at Gokula and switched the babies, he took back the girl baby sleeping next to Yashoda and returned to Mathura. The guards near the jail gave the news of the baby being born to Kamsa who came there and tried to kill the baby. but suddenly the infant slipped from his hand and rose up into the air and took the form of a resplendent goddess and told him that his enemy is already born and will destroy him soon. Though Kamsa was feeling sorry for what he had done to Devaki and Vasudeva and asked for forgiveness his goodness was short lived because of the bad company. The counselors around actually convinced him that it was not too late to protect himself and that he should kill all the infants born in the last ten days.

Kids seem to be very enthusiastic about Likhita Japa. They have been writing 'Shri Krishna Sharnam mama' with a lot of interest. Kindly encourage them to do so at home too.

Our Bhagavad Gita sloka chanting with Swamiji's guidance has started this week and we chanted the first 2 slokas from the 1st chapter, Arjuna Vishaada Yoga. Have them practice at home.

Oct 20, 2019 - Grade 4 (Sunday PM)

Hari Om Parents,

We started our class with our opening prayer and learnt the 5h and 6th slokas of Govinda Damodara Stotram.

We had another short session today on account of house inaugurals towards the end. The kids had fun doing the napkin making activity for Trenton kitchen soup as a part of giving to the needy. They have earned 300 points for their Krishna's Cowboys team. Please look out for more exciting competitions during the upcoming months like the Slokathon, Art Contest, Gita Chanting which will all earn points for the house team.

We covered the 2nd teacher from My 24 teachers book which is Air. Though air flows everywhere, may it be a beautiful garden or garbage dumpster it does not pick up a particular smell for itself. Air on its own is pure, uncontaminated and unattached. Similarly, people also need to lead their lives unattached an untainted. We told the kids how they should not get influenced by external surroundings but be goal oriented. We told them how its OK to like something but not get attached to it.

We talked about the limbs of Vishnu, which are nothing but virtues that we need to develop in our personality. We made kids read 4 different stories each of which taught one virtue.
Being Gentle, Truthful, Faithful and Kind are the 4 virtues we covered.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me or Roopa at roopab77@yahoo.com.

Balavihar is in session next Sunday October 27th.

                                                        HAPPY DIWALI !

Sep 29, 2019 - Grade 4 (Sunday PM)

Hari Om Parents,

We had a short 50 min class yesterday after which all the kids assembled in the prayer hall for Saraswati Pooja on the occasion of Navarathri. They followed the priests instructions and did the pooja with utmost devotion.

We opened our class with OM chanting followed by Sahana vavatu prayer, we then chanted the first 3 slokas of Govinda Damodara Stotram. Please have the kids practice those at home. They should be having the hand outs.

We continued our stories from Krishna Krishna everywhere and talked about the Lord's birth which most of the kids were already very well familiar with and were excited to share the same.
We told them about how the lord manifests on earth to protect the mankind and restore righteousness whenever there are a lot of sins committed. Thats how Mother Earth goes to Lord Brahma to complain about the sins committed by people and Lord Vishnu comforts her that he would be born as Krishna and will destroy Adharma and protect the righteous.

King Ugrasena of Mathura had a beautiful, virtuous daughter princess Devaki and a wicked, powerful son Kamsa. Devaki was married to Vasudeva and when Kamsa was sending them off to their new home in his chariot a heavenly voice thundered across the sky warning him that the eighth child of his sister would kill him. This panics Kamsa who puts both of them in prison and kills all their seven children while babies. In due course when the eighth child was about to be born, Lord Vishnu manifests himself in the prison and tells Vasudeva that he would be born to them and he needs to be exchanged with the girl child of Vasudeva's friend Nanda in Gokula.
After the lord's birth at midnight the chains that bound Vasudeva dropped away, the prison doors swung open and the guards fell into deep slumber paving his way to Gokula.
A couple of announcements...
We do not have Balavihaar in session next Sunday, Oct 6th.
There is CORD Walkathon on OCt 13th at the Mercer county park, look out for the email from Chinmaya Mission.

Sep 22, 2019 - Grade 4 (Sunday PM)

Hari Om Parents,

Welcome to another exciting year of Balavihar. Myself, Purna and Roopa are the teachers and we both are looking forward for another fun and exciting year with the kids.
We have a group of 20 students in our class. We will soon be creating a WhatsApp group with weekly updates apart from these emails.

Our curriculum for 4th grade is continuation of Bala Bhagavatam from 3rd grade. We will be covering 2 books.
1. Krishna Krishna everywhere - These are the stories of Lord Krishna beginning from his birth upto Kamsa Vadha which is the 10th chapter of Bhagavatam. The first nine chapters were covered in 3rd grade which is Dasavatharams.
2. My 24 teachers - In this book, Children will learn what Dattatreya Swamy has learnt from the 24 teachers in nature. This is adopted from the 11th chapter of Bhagavatam more popularly known as Avadhuta Gita.
Kids will learn to chant Govinda Damodara Stotram, Krishna ashtakam and the first chapter from Bagavad Gita with Swamiji's guidance.

Our class always starts with Om chanting and opening prayer of Sahana Vavatu. We started with the first 2 slokas of Govinda Damodara stotram, hand outs of which were passed to the kids.

The first chapter of Krishna Krishna everywhere is about the four yugas and how Kaliyuga came into existence. We told the kids about Kali, who is evil and his abode is where the lord's name is never uttered. We made kids understand how important it is to use good words in conversations with others which makes them feel happy. The first story in this book is about how King Parikshith was cursed, that he would die in 7 days of a snake bite, because of his bad deed of putting a dead snake around a meditating sages neck. King Parikshith spends his last days listening to Bhagavatam from sage Suka maharshi.

We also started My 24 teachers book in parallel and covered the first teacher, Mother Earth.
We started off by telling how anything or anyone can be a teacher as long as you have the right attitude and outlook to learn from them. We told them how Mother Earth provides us with nourishment by giving us grains, and supports us even though we plough, tear her up and dig her for oil, jewels and precious metals without complaining. The moral that she teaches us is to have patience and endurance.

Please send a notebook and pencil with your kids. We will do Likhita japa whenever time permits. The kids wrote, 'Sri Krishna Sharanam Mama' 11 times yesterday.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me or Roopa at roopab77@yahoo.com.

Hari Om,
Thank you,
Purna and Roopa.Rashmi
